Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study suggests that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," described a patient.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
